Kyiv Projects Full Sterilization Of Stray Dogs Before 2014

The Kyiv city state administration projects to accomplish sterilization of stray dogs before 2014.

Oleksandr Mazurchak, first deputy head of the Kyiv city state administration, announced this in an interview with Ukrainian News.

According to him, close to 12,000 stray dogs live in Kyiv and 6,700 dogs underwent sterilization in the 2010-2011 period.

We can sterilize another 6,000 dogs in 2012. We will completely end the growth in the stray dog population in one year. We have capacities to provide sterilizing operations at three animal shelters. If we consolidate efforts with private clinics, the sterilization of stray animals can be accomplished within two years, he said.

He said the cost of sterilization of one stray animal is UAH 350.

Sterilization of at least 90% of stray animals will stop the population.

As sterilization is a humane method to control the population of stray animals, the Kyiv city state administration will focus on it in the realization of the city program for the 2012-2016 period, he said.

He said the city budget will allocate funding for the sterilization of stray animals. The Kyiv city council will consider the program either on December 29 or at its first session in 2012.

As Ukrainian News earlier reported, the Kyiv city state administration has decided to draw up a program for the 2012-2016 period to supervise keeping of home animals and to regulate the number of stray animals through taking humane measures.
