Dog pound has 90pc rehoming rate

THE Louth county dog pound attained a 90% re-homing rate and were lauded for the extensive work being done to re-home animals, at the December council meeting.

The council heard that the dog pound, located at Dromiskin, had reported another busy year, with nearly 800 dogs passing through in 2011.

The re- homing rate remains among the best in the country, at over 90%, said Director of Services, Frank Pentony.

This is a tribute to the quality of the pound, as well as the various initiatives in place, such as uploading all dog pounds onto their website for ease of viewing and re-homing, said Mr. Pentony.

He said the level of dog licencing dropped to slightly below 7,000 in 2011, as the current economic climate impacts generally on compliance levels.

Horse control and welfare is also a function of the pound and in 2011 a total of 6 horses and 1 goat were seized, but all were either reclaimed or seized.

Cllr. Peter Savage paid tribute to County Veterinary officer, Garrett Shine and his team at the dog pound.

They really should be complimented as the facilities and services are excellent, said Cllr. Savage.
